Easy Peasy Tip: Fork You!

By tinychoices | July 28, 2007

Instead of tossing away another disposable fork/spoon/knife every day after lunch, bring a set in from home (or pick up a set for around $1 at a thrift store) and keep them at your desk. A quick rinse in the kitchen or bathroom sink, and you’re ready to chow down again tomorrow.

Fabulous! I don’t understand this. My office has a full kitchen, with cutlery, a dishwasher and a nice lady who cleans everything and yet still, people are always always using plastic tossaways (and not even recycling it in the convenient recycly can)

As long as you’ve got your own cutlery (always a smart move), think about what else you use almost every time you dine and almost always throw away: a napkin! It’s compact, affordable (often free), reusable, and saves a ton of waste.

Actually, at home, I do use cloth napkins - not sure if it’s because I’m a crunchy hippie or a classy hip chick, but now considering it for work, too…

I generally just avoid using napkins unless absolutely necessary, but having a cloth napkin in my desk drawer at work is a pretty awesome idea, and I think I will look into doing that.

On a similar topic, though - cloth handkerchiefs! I am never without one.

I can’t believe that people choose disposables in an office full of cutlery as well! I just ordered my bamboo sporks - can’t wait to test them out. So glad to see the blog up and running, and I’m looking forward to reading!

So I just started using my own cutlery at work. I am still getting used to having to say “Oh no I don’t need those” when I go out and buy my lunch. I do admit I get some weird looks form cashiers as they send me off with my food with no utensils. I feel a mix of pride and embarassment and uncomfortabeness of the newness. But one thing that made me even more happy was that I realize that a lot of take out places give you a packet of utensils. So I am not only not creating the use for another fork, but also not another spoon or knife. Not to mention the included napkin and the plastic bag the whole thing comes in. Pretty cool. My challenge this week is to start telling them I don’t need the packet before it goes into my bag instead of me taking it out and handing it back. Well that will be my little eco game I play this week. Catch the cashier before anything unwanted / needed is added to my purchase. And who said environmentalism can’t be fun.

I bring my own spork (in an envelope) and I have started requesting all my lunches to-go in reusable tupperware/gladware-type containers, and I always use handkerchiefs instead of kleenex… so I *know* I need to start bringing a cloth napkin to work instead of relying on paper napkins. And I can tie the napkin around my spork and recycle that ratty old envelope!
