Tiny Choices Survey: Peggy Apostolides

By tinychoices | August 24, 2007

Vital statistics (name, age, location)?
Peggy Apostolides, 32, NYC, NY

How do you reside (apartment or house, roommates)? Are your housing decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
I rent an apartment that I share with two roommates. One day I would
love to own my very own place to live in all by myself. Till I can
afford to do that I live with said roommates.

How do you travel (transit, car, etc)? Are your travel decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
I either walk, bike or take public transport to work. It depends on the weather or if I feel like wearing a dress. I don’t feel all that comfortable biking in a dress. Once in awhile I borrow my mother’s car if there is a necessity.

Tell us about a Tiny Choice you’ve made in your life.
I have not used my a/c all summer, ride my bike as much as I can, recycle and try to remember to bring my own reusable bag when I go buy my groceries.

What is the one environmental dilemma you personally struggle the most with?
Getting my roommates to recycle little things that they forget about like toilet paper rolls. I hate finding them in the bathroom trash when they so easily could have been dropped in the recycling bin we have in the kitchen.

What is one Tiny Choice you can make in that direction?
You mean other than nagging them? Hee hee! :)

What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you make that people question (in either a positive educational or a negative hassle way) you the most about?
My reusable bag that folds up and slips into a little pouch. Cashiers tend to think its cute or cool. One even said that its very “European”. I thought that was funny.

What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you would like every single person to adopt?
I think reusable bags since its so easy and I hate seeing all those ridiculous plastic bags being thrown away. Unless you have a dog cause then you may use them to scoop poop. I used to give my plastic bags to a friend with a big old husky.

Do you feel like you make sacrifices for environmentalism? Please explain.
Not really. Recycling is just as easy as not. Bike riding is fun. My reusable bag folds up super small so it doesn’t take up hardly any room in my purse.

Are you generally: optimistic, pessimistic, neutral about environmentalism and the future?
Optimistic, because of the increase in media exposure. Getting the word out is so important. Actually, I was discouraged when I went to Colorado to see a friend and found out that recycling is not the law there like it is in New York. That was depressing. I would think a place where people are so much more connected to nature, would be much more vigilant in caring for the earth.
