Tiny Choices Survey: Jenn Cass
By tinychoices | September 7, 2007
Vital statistics (name, age, location)?
Jenn Cass, 31, Astoria, Queens
How do you reside (apartment or house, roommates)? Are your housing decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
I live alone in an apartment. By Choice. Because 7 years ago, when I moved there, I didn’t want roommates. Now, my rent is just too incredible to move away from.
How do you travel (transit, car, etc)? Are your travel decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
I take the subway mostly, but I do own a car. I’ve been known to shirk the car in favor of (other) public transit, but, yeah, I do have a car. I’m just not crazy about driving.
Tell us about a Tiny Choice you’ve made in your life.
Can I list more than one? 1) I keep a silverware fork at my desk at work. 2) I’ve “greened” my coffee-drinking processs. I buy (lower case f+t) fair trade coffee, cold brew it at home (no electricity/gas used), and carry it in a reusuable mug. 3) Recently installed fluorescent light bulbs.
What is the one environmental dilemma you personally struggle the most with?
Probably having a car.
What is one Tiny Choice you can make in that direction?
I can make a point to plan my trips better so that I allow for public transportation time.
What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you make that people question (in either a positive educational or a negative hassle way) you the most about?
Carrying a reusable shopping bag. A lot of times store clerks just start putting stuff in a plastic bag, but I just repeat my mantra, “I don’t need a bag” until they stop. But sometimes, someone says “I love your bag” and then I enthusiastically tell them where to get one.
What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you would like every single person to adopt?
Consume less. Buying less crap means you’re spending less $$ and less of earth’s resources.
Do you feel like you make sacrifices for environmentalism? Please explain.
No, all the choices I make are pretty simple. If I feel like I’m making a sacrifice, I generally don’t do it, but I probably should.
Are you generally: optimistic, pessimistic, neutral about environmentalism and the future?
Normally pessimistic, but lately optimistic- I think people are starting to get it.

Lately, I’ve been saying, “I have a bag” instead, and it’s really working out well, clerks hear me the first time. Normally, I have to repeat that I don’t need a bag 2 or 3 times, but this way, people seem to actually hear it.
