Easy Peasy Tip: Recycled Toilet Paper
By tinychoices | September 8, 2007
Next time you run out of the white stuff, aim to buy recycled-content toilet paper for your loo. Shoot for 100% post-consumer content paper, but you might have to settle for a mixture of post-consumer and post-industrial paper. That’s ok, because it’s all better than using clear-cut old-growth forests for disposable paper products. There are many brands to choose from, and some are higher quality than others, so if one doesn’t make you happy then try another next time.

What about if the only 100% post-consumer content TP is shipped in from far away? For me it doesn’t seem to matter since ALL The TP I can buy is shipped in from far away, but it’s a conundrum.
You can also cut down on your TP use by having a basket of small reusable cloths available. You don’t really need flushable TP after #1! Keep one basket for clean and one for used cloths under your sink, and throw them into the wash with your towels and cotton underwear. Also a great way to reuse older towels, facecloths, or scraps of soft absorbent fabric like worn-out flannel pyjamas!
I will admit that I have never thought of using reusable toilet paper! Sure, there’s No Impact Man and his going TP-free… this is an interesting thing to think about, but I have to admit that I don’t think I’m quite ready for this tiny choice! :)
seventh generation does a really good recycled toilet paper - I think it’s 100%, but I don’t have the package in front of me, so I’m not sure.
Also, Marcal doesn’t always mark their products, but the owner of the company told my mum (long story) that ALL of their paper products contain recycled materials. I doubt it’s 100%, but it’s a start. And Marcal stuff is cheap.
according to the NRDC, both Marcel and 7th Generation are 100% recycled… and I know which one is cheaper and more easily available! (hint to those who have EVER bought toilet paper: it’s Marcal.) Though the 7th Generation is 80% post consumer recycled paper and the Marcal is only 40%.
I usually purchase Marcal, because it’s available at my local supermarket, and yep it’s 100% (40% PCC) recycled–and it’s cheap!
