Lush Makes Tiny Choices!

Do you know about Lush? You really should.
I discovered them on my junior term in Chester, England, oh about (counts fingers and toes) many moons ago. Walking into a Lush store is a sensory experience– the sight and smell of so many gorgeous bathbombs and soaps and lotions and glitter bars never fails to make me swoon (though admittedly, the smell may be overpowering for some). Lush makes fresh cosmetic products with few preservatives and natural ingredients.
Many of their products are sold naked, meaning, without packaging, and they encourage in-store customers to bring in their own containers and shopping bags. Best of all, they are totally on the tiny choices bandwagon– here, they wax poetic about their switch from plastic (polypropylene) packing tape to paper-based tape:
…we were struck by just how much impact small changes can make. If this new tape prevents even a couple of packages from being damaged or tampered-with during shipment, for example, not only will the lucky package recipients be happy, but think about the environmental impact… No need to re-ship a package, using more packaging, gasoline, and so on. And a little a bit of tape on each box doesn’t seem like a lot, but when you add up the thousands of packages that LUSH ships each year, that’s a pile of plastic being avoided!
We’d like to encourage, and challenge, all of our customers to think about the little changes that you can make. A lot of the time, there’s no sacrifice at all! Just a little bit of time to investigate your options.
“Little changes,” tiny choices, yay Lush!

I don’t quite agree with you as Lush as a great choice. Wouldn’t it be a better choice to use a locally made product? or a product that is not over scented and overpriced?
Locally produced is always best, for sure! And trading money for goods on a person to person basis, rather than a person to corporation basis, is preferable.
However, I think Lush is a good choice (not necessarily the best choice, but a good one) for the following reasons:
So, follow your instincts– make your own beauty goods, purchase locally, or purchase from companies who are really trying to walk the talk– and I feel that Lush falls into that last category.
