Tiny Choices Survey: MB Mullan
By tinychoices | October 26, 2007
Vital statistics (name, age, location)?
MB Mullan, 45 Brooklyn, NY (my real name is Marybeth — MB is what everyone has called me since age 16.
How do you reside (apartment or house, roommates)? Are your housing decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
I live in an apartment with my husband and 2 boys (ages 12 and 15). It’s pretty much an economical choice– I’d like to have more space, but we have a really nice garden which makes up for the lack of space.
How do you travel (transit, car, etc)? Are your travel decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
I work from home, so I don’t have to travel much. I try and walk to do all my errands locally or I use the subway to get into Manhattan. We do have a car which we use primarily on weekends to take the kids to their team sports .
Tell us about a Tiny Choice you’ve made in your life.
My husband built a compost bin for our backyard and we make really great compost out of all our kitchen scraps.
What is the one environmental dilemma you personally struggle the most with?
There are 2. The amount of laundry I am forced to do with 2 boys that play sports! And I also started driving to the Fairway Market that opened up in Brooklyn last year. Most people wouldn’t struggle with the driving to the supermarket issue, but New Yorkers know what I mean. I haven’t used my little shopping cart in months.
What is one Tiny Choice you can make in that direction?
I can limit my trips to Fairway as much as possible. The laundry issue is tough– I try to hang dry as much as I can and I already do mostly cold loads. I guess I can make my kids wear their clothes more often? I’d love to know if anyone has any ideas.
What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you make that people question (in either a positive educational or a negative hassle way) you the most about?
I get a lot of positive comments on the reusable grocery bags I take to the store. I designed them myself and sell them online at minusbags.com. They’re really pretty and very efficient– much better than a plastic bag!
What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you would like every single person to adopt?
To use minusbags when they shop, of course!
Do you feel like you make sacrifices for environmentalism? Please explain.
No, I don’t feel like I sacrifice anything. It’s just a matter of changing old habits. Once your choices become second nature to you, then you can’t believe you ever did it any other way.
Are you generally: optimistic, pessimistic, neutral about environmentalism and the future?
I think I’m an optimist about the environmental future. I think most people are really slow to change, but I have faith in the next generation. I really believe they will make big changes both in lifestyle and policy because they get it already. That’s one of the great things about being a parent– you can see hope in the future.
