Easy Peasy Tip: Switch to Reusable Cloths!

By Jenn | November 3, 2007

Instead of buying roll after roll of single-use disposable paper towels, napkins, & toilet paper, take the leap to using rags instead.

Most paper products are made from virgin timber– meaning, big trees are cut down for the sole purpose of making paper towels, napkins & toilet paper which get tossed after one use.  Have you ever seen  a swath of clear-cut forest?  It ain’t pretty.  In fact, it’s really, really sad… and that’s what happens to forested land which is mined for its timber.

So, say NO to disposables!  Rip old t-shirts into rags for cleaning (at the risk of making a sweeping generalization, men usually have an abundance of old t-shirts)!  Switch to using cloth napkinsGive up TP for #1! (um, but don’t look at us here at TC for that one… yet, anyway…)

really not too much of a change for those who use cloth pads.

not just for pads, but reusable cloths for washcloths, rags to wipe down the counter, etc.!

these are great if you have lots of knick-nacks b/c you can stick your hand right in the old sock for extra good dusting control.

Jenn,
Although I love your intentions I would love to know what you do when Flo comes to town? I mean I do detest maxi pads but I would rather use a feminine hygiene product created for a woman and not a sock.

Hey Pauline! Well, I talked about organic tampons here… and I use them occassionally. I also use organic liners on an as-needed basis. And I know lots of ladies who use reusable pads. But my staple product is The Keeper menstrual cup. We haven’t really talked much about these yet, but you can read Green As A Thistle’s experiences with making the switch.
