Tiny Choices Survey: Jennifer Floyd

By tinychoices | November 16, 2007

Vital statistics (name, age, location, link to website/blog)?
Jennifer Floyd, 31, San Diego, CA

How do you reside (apartment or house, roommates)? Are your housing decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.

I live with my boyfriend, renting the downstairs of my boyfriend’s mom in a huge house. It’s mostly by choice, though the very cheap rent makes the rest of our bills more manageable.

How do you travel (transit, car, etc)? Are your travel decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.

I drive 25 miles each way to work. I carpool with my boyfriend since we work close to each other. We both would like to bike in a few days per week but it’s a long way so it’s hard to motivate.

Tell us about a Tiny Choice you’ve made in your life.
I’ve been trying to make small changes for the past year or so with the thought that they could all add up to something big. One tiny choice is that we’ve given up the dryer and dry our clothes outside. It doesn’t rain here very often so there’s no reason to use the dryer.

What is the one environmental dilemma you personally struggle the most with?
Driving to work.

What is one Tiny Choice you can make in that direction?
Bike to work more often or find a third person for carpooling.

What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you make that people question (in either a positive educational or a negative hassle way) you the most about?
I get mad when people put paper in the trash when the recycle bin is only steps away from the trash. I pick it out and put it in the recycle bin and sometimes people think I’m crazy.

What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you would like every single person to adopt?
Stop using plastic bags. You can get the reusable ones at the supermarket for only 99 cents.

Do you feel like you make sacrifices for environmentalism? Please explain.
Each change sometimes starts out feeling like a sacrifice but in the end it’s not really.

Are you generally: optimistic, pessimistic, neutral about environmentalism and the future?
It depends on the day. Sometimes I feel like everyone is trying to do their part but other times I see all the Hummers and lifted trucks and I get pretty down about the future.
