Easy Peasy Tip: Visit your local library!
By tinychoices | December 8, 2007
Have you been to your local library lately? If you haven’t, you might be surprised: libraries are cool again. Most libraries have, in addition to lots and lots of books, extensive video and music collections as well. Plus, many libraries have their catalogs on the internets and you can pick out books and request them on-line!
By taking a trip to the library instead of buying a book or DVD that you will read or watch one time and then never again, you’re saving money and resources!

Do your local librarians know you by name?

I’m at the library like three times a week, seriously.
*sigh* the library is one of those things that I just can’t keep up with– it always, always beats me. In the fifth grade I wrecked my mom’s library card with a book I took out for the science fair (I still swear that I returned that one) and it’s been downhill ever since.
So, since I realize my limitations and avoid the library, instead I try to buy books secondhand instead of new. So at least that way I’m not ingesting virgin books.
I do so envy you library people, though. Maybe in my next life I’ll be able to properly manage a library membership!
I keep a special tote bag for library books. I try to keep my books located in that bag in a central location so I don’t lose them. and it helps that I live within walking distance of my local branch. And, it helps that the library sends me overdue notices to my email account!
(I too have wrecked a library card account in my past. um. I don’t know what happened, colonie town library! I’m very sorry!)
My library is also online with a great system. They offer email reminders on the day media is due. However, that’s not enough lead time for me.
What works best for our family on the “what’s due when” front was signing up with LibraryElf. I *heart* them very much. You can get email reminders, RSS feed and/or text messaging about what you’ve got checked out and when it’s due.
I have my bar code memorized. It’s all about doing my librarying online and having things sent to my local branch.
I love my library! and the librarians really do know me by name. I am always getting weird books delivered via my very favorite interlibrary loan.
As for the librarians, the day crew includes Jeanne, Becky, Janie, and sometimes John. Just as important to me – do they know my name? The answer for most of them (day and evening crews) is yes. Who needs a library card when they already have your account pulled up? When we see one another out and about we always stop to chat a bit.
(Homeschooling my two kiddos might also have lead to the familiarity. :-)
