Donate Old Packing Peanuts

By Jenn | December 13, 2007

According to PlanetGreen.com, UPS and Mailbox Etc stores will accept used-but-clean packing peanuts, for reuse in their outgoing shipments. This effectively ends the agonizing guilt of throwing these things into the trash, while at the same time getting them out of the house. Sweet!

All of our extra peanuts go into the dog bed beanbags I made a few years ago. As they get all squished down we replenish. I don’t think we’ve ever thrown away the “fluffies” that are contained in the inner bag. The kids just keep shoving in those peanuts.

I just save and reuse them myself when I need to send something — but then I guess I don’t get that many of them since I don’t do a lot of online shopping. Shop local! :)

Besides creating less packaging/transportation waste, shopping local is such a nice way to actually interact with the people who are making their livings by selling you the things you need. And I feel that, as a culture, we’re getting more interaction-starved with each year that passes. So, just another good reason to keep it close to home!

ps- love your blog!

If you live in the triangle area (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill) in North Carolina, donate packing peanuts to Student Solutions, Inc., a small nonprofit educational children’s book publisher in Chapel Hill. They’ll pick them up if they are clean and reusable. www.student-solutions.org or www.FunTestPrep.com (they are the publishing agency behind the Chicken Nugget Man series of humorous test prep books for elementary school students).
