Holiday Light Displays

Now that Christmas is nigh, and now that I’m out of the metro-NYC area and have been driving around Upstate NY with my family, I’ve been feasting my eyes on that most-American of traditions: the excessive and brilliant Christmas Light Display.
I do love the holidays, and I love the innovation and (at times) garishness of Christmas light displays. I hate the blow up snow-globes that are so popular these days, and prefer the old fashioned lights that are staple-gunned up every year, row by excruciating row. But you can’t get away from the fact that such large and incredible light displays use up an incredible amount of energy. But there are ways around it! if you are planning to decorate for the holidays, invest in some LED lights. They use much less energy than traditional lights. Here are some LED resources:
- Treehugger recommends these charming pinecone LEDs
- HolidayLEDs.com appears to be a leading on-line retailer (note: we haven’t actually bought any LEDs from this shop.)
- Gizmodo recommends LED christmas lights
- GetwithGreen.com has a HUGE clearinghouse of links related to LED lights
For excessive and/or amazing Christmas light displays, check out here or here or here.
I haven’t decorated for the holidays in years and have a bunch of Christmas lights bundled up in a box at the ready… but I plan to purchase LED lights when I need to get new ones!

There’s always several times out here in December where you can swap out your old Christmas lights and get FREE LED lights. I think it is sponsored by PG&E.
that’s wonderful! I will keep my eyes open for that sort of thing here on the east coast next year!
[…] doing them won’t be any more burdensome than not. For example, a recent post tells you where to buy LED Christmas lights that use a lot less energy than traditional ones. Who’d-a-thunk? Why is this sooo important? […]
