Things Which Look Like Other Things…

By Jenn (TinyChoices.com) | January 31, 2008

There seems to be a whole movement going on now, with things which look like other things… (I really wanted to write “stuff that looks like other stuff” but Angry Chicken was smarter than me, earlier than me.)

Anyway, I really love these reusable items which are modeled after disposables– they are at once familiar and brand-new. And, they make me question the point of disposables (like I need to question them more)– so much energy and so many resources go into producing single-use items, just to be used for a brief moment and then spend all of eternity buried in a landfill… sometimes I wonder how we evolved instead of the Orangutans.

Of course, a whole lot of energy goes into making reusable items as well– and my love of ceramics is dampened somewhat by the knowledge of how ungreen the process is (kilns use massive amounts of energy, glazes are generally at least somewhat toxic, etc). So the deal is the same as always– if you don’t need it, don’t buy it, and save yourself and the rest of us some carbon footprinting.

i’ve had one of the “happy to serve you” mugs for a few years. i LOVE it. however, without a handle, it does get a bit hot on the fingers.

i covet the brightly-colored faux aluminumware. a store nearby sells it, but i don’t think i could justify such a silly concept when i still don’t have a real set of dinner plates.

Perhaps those could be your real set of dinner plates….

Yes! Thank you! I have been looking for the deli coffee cup for a long time. I actually got the hot chocolate cups from Crate and Barrel because they are so cute.

Thanks for posting these. I have been drawing on my empty paper coffee cups for ages, turning them into art objects – not reusable cups. I have been wondering about doing a hard version of the project, hand drawing on porcelain cups like these so people can actually drink from them. But now that I am thinking about how un-green the manufacturing process is, maybe I will stick with my trash-into-art project.
