Tiny Choices Survey: David
By tinychoices | March 7, 2008
Vital statistics (name, age, location, link to website/blog)?
David, 35, Los Angeles, CA
How do you reside (apartment or house, roommates)?
I live in a 2-bedroom apartment with my wife and our 14 year old cat
Are your housing decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
We rent because we have to - it is way too expensive to buy here where we live. That being said, we are in the midst of planning a move to New Mexico, where we are contemplating buying/building an earthship.
How do you travel (transit, car, etc)? Are your travel decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
I walk and my wife drives our one car, a Mini Cooper. I work from home, and I can walk to the store, the bank, the movies, restaurants, everything, so we are fine with just one car.
Tell us about a Tiny Choice you’ve made in your life.
A tiny choice I made was to switch to a shampoo bar of soap instead of buying the soap in plastic bottles, that way there is no waste. We do everything we can to be sustainable and mindful of our environment, but you said Tiny Choice!
What is the one environmental dilemma you personally struggle the most with?
Gadgets. I like my computers, cell phone, etc. And although we should make everything last as long as we can, I do get gadget-itis.
What is one Tiny Choice you can make in that direction?
Start thinking more along the lines of where this stuff comes from in the first place.
What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you make that people question (in either a positive educational or a negative hassle way) you the most about?
Some members of our family don’t understand why we only have 1 car, or why we handmade our Christmas cards this year on recycled paper, or why we take our coffee mugs with us when we go get coffee. They just don’t see the bigger picture outside their own lives, which is something that a lot of people have trouble doing.
What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you would like every single person to adopt?
Reusable coffee and water bottles. The amount of trash created by these things is incredible.
Do you feel like you make sacrifices for environmentalism? Please explain.
No, not really. I mean, I would like to drive a sports car that gets 10 MPG, but I cannot allow myself to do that. I buy clothes like everyone else, but I try to buy them second-hand and/or made from sustainable materials. We live like everyone else, for the most part.
Are you generally: optimistic, pessimistic, neutral about environmentalism and the future?
I am cautiously optimistic, because although I feel the message is getting out and people are starting to react to it, I think a lot of it is viewed as a fad. Prius’s are nice, don’t get me wrong, but I think many people buy them for the wrong reason, at least here in Los Angeles. For me, I just don’t understand the idea of denying global warming, because even if it was not happening, shouldn’t we as a people start taking better care of the planet?
