Tiny Choices Survey: Suzy
By tinychoices | March 14, 2008
Vital statistics (name, age, location, link to website/blog)?
Suzy, 27, Scarsale NY,
How do you reside (apartment or house, roommates)? Are your housing decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
I live in an apartment with my husband, two cats, a turtle and some hermit crabs.
I guess our housing decision is a necessity because we just moved to New York and our uncle is letting us rent his apartment. We hope to get a house soon though.
How do you travel (transit, car, etc)? Are your travel decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
I travel by car, which is a necessity to get to work. But we near enough to the store and some great places to eat which we walk to.
Tell us about a Tiny Choice you’ve made in your life.
I bring a reusable water bottle, a coffee mug and a tea mug to work. Keeps me hydrated and stops me from making unnecessary trips to a coffee shop or soda machine.
What is the one environmental dilemma you personally struggle the most with?
Buying food. I try to make good choices, but sometimes it hard not to buy something that came from a far off place and is way cheaper than organic.
What is one Tiny Choice you can make in that direction?
When I am able to, I want to grow my own vegetables and fruits and own some chickens.
What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you make that people question (in either a positive educational or a negative hassle way) you the most about?
For some reason, some people just can’t grasp my electricity choices. I don’t turn on lights until I absolutely need to, I only turn on the amount that I need, only in the room I’m in and at bedtime, I turn off all the things that don’t need to be in standby (computer, video games, tv…)
What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you would like every single person to adopt?
Recycle! Seriously it’s so super easy to take like two extra steps and put your paper, cans and whatever in recycle bin. I’ve seen recyclable plastic and newspapers in the trash bin in my apartment building when the recycle bin is right next to it! Ahhhh! I hate the excuse, “I know I should, but….”
Do you feel like you make sacrifices for environmentalism? Please explain.
No, I feel that my life if better because I’m learning to live more simple and mindful and appreciate this awesome world we live in. I get so excited about the things I want to do one day like compost, eat my own vegetables, green a house, support causes, show my kids how to take care of the earth and so much more.
Are you generally: optimistic, pessimistic, neutral about environmentalism and the future?
Most of the time I’m optimistic. It’s great that more people and companies are becoming aware and trying to help. At the same time I get so depressed because lot’s of people don’t give a crap even members of my family and I can’t see them wanting to make even small changes when it’s just so easy! But I will keep on doing what I’m doing and hope to inspire and show people just how easy some it can be.
