Easy Peasy Tips: Choose Native Plants!
By tinychoices | March 15, 2008
It’s nearly springtime here in North America (ok, not in Montreal just yet) and it’s time to plan and plant your gardens. You may have a yard and be thinking of reseeding, or planning a big landscaping job. If so, choose native plants! They require less watering because they’re better suited to your local climate, they grow better than other plants without fertilizer and pesticides, and they require less maintenance. And if you’re really into it, you can redo your entire yard!
The EPA (they’re all over this environment thing, aren’t they?) has a fact sheet here and even more information here. You can find local nurseries here.

Excellent post! We’re lucky enough to work with a landscaping company here in the SF Bay Area that does sustainable, local-oriented work. And they’re part of the EPA Greenscapes Alliance. They’re helping us update our yards with native plants, which is really exciting.
The National Wildlife Federation has bunches of info about the USA for planting native gardens in your area. You can look it up state by state to find exactly what you need. PLUS they have this cool program (which i did at three houses) where you can get your yard certified as a Natural Habitat for local critters. It’s alot of fun to do and it’s not as hard as it seems it would be.
