Easy Peasy Tip: Green Your Shaving!

By tinychoices | March 29, 2008

The greenest way to shave is, of course, to not shave at all. But for those who want or need to continue the practice, there are easy ways to eco it up:

– Use earth-friendly shaving cream: This can range from a brand you find at a natural goods store, to your eco-friendly shampoo, soap, or lotion.

– Use greener razors: Forget disposables– at the very least, use a razor with a replaceable head– and you can also purchase a razor-cartridge sharpener to extend the usable life of your blades. Or switch to using a straight razor– once you get the technique down, you’ll be amazed at how few razor blades you use each year.

– Use a rechargable shaver: This isn’t the greenest option due to the production and shipping of the razor itself, but it will afford you the opportunity to avoid using shaving lotions and water, and with good care a recharable shaver can last for a very long time.

– Don’t forget to turn the water off while you’re shaving!

so has any one figured out when and where the shaving thing started?
when i stopped shaving twenty plus years ago, it was an american thing. today, most of the affluent world. once again, bad habits started here, and picked up world-wide. what started this was when i over heard a woman stating she was going to start shaving her arms because she had such dark hair….

There are also Solar shavers !
I use a shaver with a replacable head, and i leave it on there till the whole life is sucked out of it :)

Do you have any recomendations on where to buy a replaceable head razor or a straight edge razor in NYC? My boyfriend was thinking about going that route, but we don’t know where to get it. I barely shave as it is so it’s more for him than me. Thanks!

I’ve given up on shaving creams and now shave with Dr. Bronner’s. It works just as well as shaving cream (just lather a little in your hands, then spread on), even on my VERY sensitive skin. It also seems to make my legs shiny for about a day! I already use Dr. B’s for body wash, and it’s nice not to have to bring that extra huge can of shaving cream with me when I travel.

Hey Rachel! I wonder what the shiny legs thing is about… anyway, good point on how it cuts down on the number of products we have to use. Less schlepping = more happy.
