Tiny Choices Survey: Nicole

By tinychoices | April 11, 2008

Vital statistics (name, age, location, link to website/blog)?
Nicole, 29, Alexandria, VA, Knerq.

How do you reside (apartment or house, roommates)?
Own a townhouse, living with my husband and our two cats. Our priorities were nearness to work, good access to public transit, and a walkable neighborhood. We also scored last summer with the small farmer’s market that was started within a few minutes walk.

Are your housing decisions dictated by choice or necessity?
By choice. It was worth it to pay more to live closer to work.

How do you travel (transit, car, etc)?
Most days, my husband drives our hybrid vehicle and drops me off to work on the way to his and picks me up on the way home. When our schedules are different, he drives and I take public transportation (subway or bus).

Are your travel decisions dictated by choice or necessity?
By choice for the most part. We don’t travel for work much and when we go on vacation it’s usually shorter trips in the US or long trips to places far away.

Tell us about a Tiny Choice you’ve made in your life.

Our shower takes a few minutes for the water to heat up so while it’s doing that, I collect the water to fill our humidifier, our cats water containers, and the watering can for our house plants.

What is the one environmental dilemma you personally struggle the most with?
Not knowing if I’m doing the best thing I can, sorting through all the choices, trying to decide which ones are really better for the environment.

What is one Tiny Choice you can make in that direction?
More education from filtered sources. Sometimes too much is too much.

What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you make that people question (in either a positive educational or a negative hassle way) you the most about?

Picking things out of the trash - like the recyclable paper that is sitting on top not touching anything gross, the empty soda can, and other recyclables. Or the planter stand that someone put out with the curbside trash that is now in our house. I think it drives my husband crazy, and I’m careful about doing it at work because most of my coworkers would think I’m crazy, but sometimes I think I’ll go insane if I just let it go when there is something I can do about it.

What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you would like every single person to adopt?

Stop printing and copying so much, stop wasting paper.

Do you feel like you make sacrifices for environmentalism?
Sometimes but not always… there’s always someone out there who is doing more that makes me feel ashamed that I’m not making a bigger effort.

Are you generally: optimistic, pessimistic, neutral about environmentalism and the future?
Somewhat pessimistic in that I’m not sure the damage can ever be reversed but I keep trying nonetheless, which is optimistic to think that I can still make a difference.
