Easy Peasy Tip: Host A Clothing Swap!
By tinychoices | April 12, 2008

Clothing Swaps (we call them Naked Lady Parties) are an amazing way of sprucing up your wardrobe without spending a cent or making a dent on the environment– and, men are, of course, invited too! The rules are simple:
– Invite some friends, and invite their friends too (the more atendees the better the clothing selection!
– Serve simple snacks and drinks to keep people happy and energized
– Everyone brings clothing they’re not in love with anymore, and they can also bring housewares, books, accessories as well. There’s no minimum amount needed to attend a swap.
– Choose which style of Naked Lady Party you’d like to have:
East Coast Style: Everything gets dumped into one big pile, and an emcee runs the show– they hold up each piece of clothing, tell the size, material, era, etc, and hand it over to the interested party. If more than one person wants it, they decide amongst themselves, perhaps by trying it on and seeing if it fits right.
West Coast Style: Everything gets dumped into a big pile, and everyone is let loose to dig through it on their own. This style works surprisingly well, but there is less chance for biting commentary on the patchwork bandana vest you brought (but won’t admit to being yours).
– Make sure to provide a space for folks to try on as necessary.
– Make sure to invite at least one friend who owns a car, so that they can take the leftovers to a thrift store when the party is over!

Sounds fun! I may have to think about that next time before I take my stuff to the Goodwill.
when I was through with my last swap, I took the leftover clothes to a resale store. I took the cash I made and gave it to my favorite not-for-profit, Books Through Bars. This is a great way to get the stuff out of your house and help out a organization in need. I can’t wait for the next swap. Who’s hosting in the nyc area next?
[…] Sometimes we just fall out of love with our bluejeans. It happens! If you don’t wear them anymore but they still have life left, donate them to a thrift store or bring them to a clothing swap/Naked Lady Party. […]
We do our clothing swaps slightly differently. Rather than one huge mess of clothes, which would be hard to look through, my friend and I will designate different areas around her home, like tables and couches etc, for different types of clothes. We make simple signs to let people know the couch is for pants, the table is for dresses, etc. Then you just have to dig to find your size or whatever. But when you have a lot of stuff, one big pile just doesn’t sound that easy to navigate. Plus, we always make it a potluck, and we donate the extra clothes to shelters and other non-profits.
