Tiny Choices Survey: Birdie
By tinychoices | April 25, 2008
Vital statistics (name, age, location, link to website/blog)?
Birdie Carpenter, 36 yo, Dover, NH.
How do you reside (apartment or house, roommates)?
Townhouse with 2 roommates and one dog.
Are your housing decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
Mostly dictated by necessity. I’m a student with limited income. I just happen to be fortunate enough to have found an affordable living situation that is allows me to utilize public transportation or carpooling and to have found 2 roommates that are like minded.
How do you travel (transit, car, etc)? Are your travel decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
I travel mostly by bus or carpool or bike (weather permitting). This is by choice. I don’t like to drive if I can avoid it.
Tell us about a Tiny Choice you’ve made in your life.
I am part of a CSA in the area as well as trying to support small local companies. Where local is not available, I try to buy organic as much as possible. I also have a small garden during the summer.
What is the one environmental dilemma you personally struggle the most with?
I don’t know if it is the dilemma that I struggle with the most, but traveling to see my family requires that I use air travel. One trip seems to negate all the other efforts that I make in my life.
What is one Tiny Choice you can make in that direction?
I am looking at buy carbon credits for all my air travel, but this seems to be a bit of a cop out. Time allowing, I would try to take the train, but sometimes that just isn’t very realistic.
What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you make that people question (in either a positive educational or a negative hassle way) you the most about?
I don’t really get hassled at this point for the decisions that I’m making.
What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you would like every single person to adopt?
I would like to see everyone let go of their car obsessions and either walk, bike, or take the bus more in their day to day lives.
Do you feel like you make sacrifices for environmentalism? Please explain.
I don’t feel like the choices that I’m making are sacrifices.
Are you generally: optimistic, pessimistic, neutral about environmentalism and the future?
It depends. Most of the time I’m pretty optimistic, but there are times when the future looks pretty bleak.

Certainly one trip home can’t negate all your efforts - many people drive plus air travel all the time, and no effort is made - You Totally count, cause we are all doing it too and it’s going to add up :)
Love the happy picture too !
