Tiny Choices Survey: Kristine
By tinychoices | May 9, 2008
Vital statistics (name, age, location, link to website/blog)?
Kristine, almost 60 (omg!!!) Albany, NY
How do you reside (apartment or house, roommates)?
Small apartment, no roommates.
Are your housing decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
I choose to live in an an apartment, but it’s also dictated by being divorced, truck almost died, and low paying job.
How do you travel (transit, car, etc)? Are your travel decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
Car, sorry to admit — I got a bicycle, took it to a huge empty parking lot to practice, and it rather scared me to death. Maybe a girl’s instead of boy’s would have been better! There are buses close, but the walk from the stop to the shop where I start my work day is far, and in the morning I am lucky to get there before 7am.
Tell us about a Tiny Choice you’ve made in your life.
I finally have solved the plastic grocery store garbage bag problem [ed. note: Kristine’s April Tiny Challenge!] after calling Karina to ask how… I use the orange juice carton for wet/food bearing garbage, everything dry/paper I put into receptacle and all goes into dumpster. Also I’ve replaced 4 of the light bulbs in my apartment with CFL, better than not. Recently I bought a water saving shower head. I keep silverware and cloth napkin in both my backpack and lunch bag.
What is the one environmental dilemma you personally struggle the most with?
The car… but I always need my own easy escape from uncomfortable things.
What is one Tiny Choice you can make in that direction?
Try not to go out much… especially since I’m getting worse at night driving.
What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you make that people question (in either a positive educational or a negative hassle way) you the most about?
I really haven’t been questioned or hassled about anything, since I put the canvas bags on the counter before the purchases, altho’ at the quicky place (Stewarts) I always need to tell them “no thank you” to a bag.
What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you would like every single person to adopt?
Eliminating the plastic. This week at work we had volunteers helping for clean-up day, and we provided them with so many plastic bottles of water to drink from. I don’t know how to get around this.
Do you feel like you make sacrifices for environmentalism? Please explain.
Not really, I want to have a safer world for my grandchildren’s grandchildren.
Are you generally: optimistic, pessimistic, neutral about environmentalism and the future?
Mostly optimistic, but some days I really don’t know. I believe we will get it soon, just hope it is sooner than later.

Full disclosure: hey, everyone, meet my mom! :)
yaay! kari’s mom rocks!!
one of these days i’ll get my mom to fill out this survey - eco-friendly moms are the bestest!! :)
Oh, please do! We’d love to read about your green momma!
Perhaps the next time you recruit volunteers or send them details of the day’s activity you could include a list of tips including bringing their own water bottle.
What a lovely surprise! Hi Kari’s Mom! Ironically I was just talking to someone who participated in the NYC borough bike tour and she gawked at the fact that they provided plastic water bottles at an event that was meant to highlight pro-environmental choices. What the heck ever happened to hose water and water fountains?
you know my fondness for the sweet taste of hose water!
Yay for Karina’s mom! :)
