Easy Peasy Tip: Download Music & Software!
By tinychoices | July 12, 2008
The next time you purchase music or software, opt for downloading it instead of purchasing it on a disc. CDs and DVDs are made from plastics and contain all kinds of crazy chemical formulations, and then there’s the plastic case, plastic overwrap, and printed paper liner to consider.
If you’re worried about not having a backup in case of a computer crash, just back the files up on an external (reusable!) hard drive instead of burning your downloads onto individual discs (which are generally single-use).

Wow, what a co-winky-dink!
Going through my blog reader this morning, Your post came just after a post about how to “mount” DVD images without actually using a physical DVD.
My computer is running Ubuntu Linux, so it is not a tip that would necessarily be of use to many of your readers, but here is the post.

There are also ways to do the same sort of trick on Macs and PCs. Theoretically, if you watch movies primarily on your PC, you could keep your entire CD/DVD “collection” on reusable media.
Another upside is that if your CD/DVD reader gets broken or jammed, you can still use your software!

I was just thinking I should start doing that! I’ve never legally downloaded music before… then again, I hardly ever buy music. I wonder if iTunes has the Mediaevel Baebes.
I hadn’t thought of the actual content of the CD–I had just been thinking about how much freaking plastic there is on the cases.
Oh dear, I just reread my comment and it sounds like I spend all my time illegally downloading music! And actually I guess I have legally downloaded music before, but it’s still free. Let me clarify: I used to download music (free and illegal) a lot. I have not done so for several years, but in my entire life I have not bought very many CDs.
now if someone could just get rid of the DRM attached to some downloaded music, we’d be all set!
That was a great post. I will have to bookmark this site so I can read it later.
