Poll: August Tiny Challenge!
By Jenn (TinyChoices.com) | July 29, 2008
Our April Tiny Challenge was so much fun that we’d love to do it all over again during the dog days of August. The Tiny Challenge is all about YOU participating, so tell us what you’d like to Challenge about (and please use the “other” box if none of our proposed options interest you). Our hope is to choose an August Tiny Challenge topic which is measurable and easy to track, so we can all have a very clear idea of how we’re doing with the goal at hand:

i thought about choosing “personal transportation” until i realized that it would be a month of nagging my boyfriend to use his bike more often.
i’ve been struggling with the plastic bags lately, strangely enough because of the biweekly trips to the farmer’s market – making sure that my fruits don’t get crushed by potatoes and other heavy veggies means that i’ll default to a small plastic bag provided by the vendor. maybe i need some more small-sized reusable bags that will hold berries perfectly? in any case, plastic bags it is.
I think it’s a great month to look at food choices and a decent month to look at personal transportation, but maybe save bags & straws & bottles for the winter…
food choices seems like a great option for this season, since there are so many fresh veggies out there! i’m psyched to have found a farm share with organic produce and a nearby pickup point. (i am going a little zucchini-crazy right now, though!)
Living on the 18th floor of a high-rise in NYC, I found that the only thing I am reluctant to change is the usage of the AC. There were a couple of articles in the last month about ways to cool oneself down, but mostly it seems to be grin-and-bear-it. As opposed to most of the topics on this site, it just doesn’t seem to me to be a tiny choice to stop using the AC. I would love to be able to chart a way to gradually introduce alternative cooling methods and eventually phase AC out altogether.
Hi Li! In case you missed it, Karina talked about her no-AC decision here, and I wrote about fans vs. AC here.
i for one still don’t know where i stand on the paper vs. plastic issue! i’ve been pretty good about toting my reusable bags (one in my purse for spontaneous spending and the regular four heavy duty bags for the grocery shopping) but whenever i forget and need to get a bag on the spot, i don’t know what to do! plastic bags i can and do reuse at home for rubbish bin liners, but i can’t figure out how to reuse paper bags (that are caput once they’re crushed or wet) at home. plus, there’s conflicting info about which bag type is worse for the environment. have you seen this article (http://www.reason.org/commentaries/smithheisters_20080417.shtml) detailing how many barrels of oil (and water, etc.) go into making paper vs. plastic bags? what’s a tiny chooser to do?
Hey K*m! The best answer to “Paper or Plastic?” is: neither. Both are disposable, both take a whole lot of resources to produce, and in the process create lots of pollution. But you knew that already. So for the times when you forget your reusable bags and really do need to choose one over the other– it’s totally your call. :) The plastic bags are reusable, at least…. but there’s also no hope of them ever not existing, which sucks. Paper has a heavier footprint but can be easily recycled. Um, good luck?
