Tiny Choices Survey: Kim!
By tinychoices | August 8, 2008
Vital statistics (name, age, location, link to website/blog)? How do you reside (apartment or house, roommates)?
I’m Kim and I’m 25. I live on the Central Coast of California, in a granny unit (above a garage). There’s not too many apartment complexes here, so most people rent granny units or parts of converted houses. I write www.chicbynature.com
Are your housing decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
More choice. I choose to live near downtown so I can walk to shop or run errands. I only have to drive to get groceries. I’ve lived far away from entertainment before and I find i end up spending too much time (and resources!) driving to hang out with friends.
How do you travel (transit, car, etc)? Are your travel decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
I walk as much as possible, but I drive a few times a week. I own a hatchback that has pretty good mileage. I’d like to own a hybrid, but the cost is too much.
Tell us about a Tiny Choice you’ve made in your life.
I’ve worked my hardest to have as little waste as possible. I compost most of my foodstuffs and recycle everything else. I try not to throw anything away and I’ve been taking my own bags for over a year now.
What is the one environmental dilemma you personally struggle the most with?
I am at heart a fashionista, so I find the split between my fashion loving self and my green self a lot. I love green fashion, but it’s often cheaper to buy the commercially produced cotton tee as opposed to the nice organic tee.
What is one Tiny Choice you can make in that direction?
I’m working on minimizing my life and buying things that will last as opposed to trends. That way I can afford to spend on the better goods.
What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you make that people question (in either a positive educational or a negative hassle way) you the most about?
In a very good way, friends often ask me about composting. They always think it’s very difficult until I educate them that I really have a rubbermaid tub with holes and a kitchen compost. I’ve converted quite a few people.
What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you would like every single person to adopt?
Being conscious about packaging. If it’s a choice between an organic pizza with layers of packaging and a commercial pizza with one layer of saran wrap, I’ll take the one with less packaging.
Do you feel like you make sacrifices for environmentalism? Please explain.
I don’t. I feel like I make choices and some of those are easy to adopt (carrying my own bags) and some are more difficult (using a menstrual cup). It all takes time, but it’s all worth it.
Are you generally: optimistic, pessimistic, neutral about environmentalism and the future?
I’m optimistic. Being a fashion blogger, I’m watching the slow shift toward mainstream green fashion. Making organic cotton, bamboo and other fabrics available to the everyday person is a big step, I think.
