Green Web Host–Acorn Hosting

By Jenn (TinyChoices.com) | August 21, 2008

I don’t think we’ve ever mentioned the web hosting company which serves up Tiny Choices, but we sure should, because they rock.

When we were starting up last year, we gave a lot of thought to the host we wanted to use, and for a variety of reasons decided on Acorn Host out of Portland, Oregon. Acorn Host is a small, woman-owned company, and is 100% powered by green power through the purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates. Their hosting plans are inexpensive and generous, and they offer discounts to non-profit groups. Those are all great talking points, but the real clincher is that their heart is in the right place:

From Acorn Host:
“The mission of Acorn Host is to support and enrich life by being an asset to the local and global community…

We are carbon neutral and offer non-profit web hosting at a reduced rate. Our criteria for the discount are based on the mission of the organization and their need, rather than on government paperwork.

We are incredibly proud to host some amazing organizations doing profound work to help the world. Please visit our customer directory to see for yourself.”

Emma McCreary started the company in 2002 as an offshoot of her design business, and her personal manifesto is one which I think all of us can agree on: “I am passionate about conscious capitalism and the potential for businesses with a sense of purpose and the higher good to transform the world. I believe there is a spiritual ecology to business: if you are doing good work that is needed in the world, your ideal customers will naturally be attracted to you and your business will flow.”

We’re incredibly happy with Acorn and highly recommend them!
Do you have a green hosting company you’d like to tell the world about?

i think i’ve posted this before, but anyway.. i use dreamhost! they are also carbon neutral, and offer free hosting to non-profits.

besides that stuff, i also really like how transparent they are (they have a status blog to let you know what’s going on at all times), and how open they are to suggestions–actually, they give all members a certain number of “points” they can use to vote for or against user-generated suggestions.

TC – y’all rock!

oh, but you know what, maybe you should give Acorn a little shout out with an icon & link down at the bottom of your page … spread the word?

Hi,

Emma here from over at Acorn Host. Thanks so much for the mention on your blog! I’m glad you are enjoying the hosting. =)

@Brandy
I like the way DreamHost is transparent as well, they really have a Web 2.0-informed style of doing business – transparent, connected, making full use of blogging, etc. They are definitely a role model.

Emma

It’s really good to see that web hosting companies are becoming green and doing something good for the environment. I have my web site hosted over at Greengeeks. They’ve done an outstanding job at making sure the hosting is superb and the simple fact that they are giving back to the planet makes spending the money there a great choice!

Kudo’s to those hosts who are green!
