NYC: Hybrid Taxis & Fab Water

By Jenn | August 28, 2008

Hello, lovely readers! I’ve got two wonderful NYC stories to share today:

Wonderful NYC Story #1: Yellow cabs go green faster in NYC: “New York City’s yellow taxi fleet now will go green at the rate of 300 new hybrid cars a month, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, citing an agreement with car-makers to supply the fuel-light cabs. There are already more than 1,300 hybrid taxis in the city, and each one saves its drivers about $6,500 a year, Taxi and Limousine Commission Chairman Matthew Daus said in a joint statement with the mayor.”

Back in December, the Taxi and Limousine Commission voted to mandate that all new taxis are hybrid vehicles, and their goal is that by 2012 the entire fleet will be all-hybrid, or hybrids + other high MPG cars. This will go a long way towards giving us city folk cleaner air to breathe! Not to mention cutting down on what must be insane gas bills for the cab drivers.

Wonderful NYC Story #2: NYC’s drinking water wins state taste test: “Beating more than 150 other municipal water systems, New York City came in first — for the first time — in the New York State Water Taste Test at the State Fair in Syracuse this week… The annual water taste test — this was its 22nd year — is a “nonscientific competition” co-sponsored by the State Department of Health and the New York section of the American Water Works Association. About 250 people attending the fair judged the blind taste test.”

I’m a big fan of our municipal water, as I’ve been drinking it for most of my life. And, I like it! I think it tastes really great. All of the water delivered through the pipes and tubes in this crazy city is unfiltered, though a filtration plant is currently being built in the Bronx. With this official state-fair verification of the deliciousness of the city water, I hereby forbid any resident or visitor to purchase bottled water.

Glad we’ve got that out of the way…

You know, every little thing does make a difference, i am like an eco scout around Asheville NC. I was excited to find at the main bank downtown there was a bike rack out front to lock my bike to - then when i used the bathroom at the bank they had 100% recycled tiolet paper!!! PLUS then one of the bankers tells me there are some rare falcons living on top the building and they are taking measures to make sure they stay safe.
AWESOME!

[…] might remember that NYC tap water recently won a statewide taste test– and is generally heralded as being high quality and delicious.  So in theory I can […]
