Driving like a Granny

By Karina | September 17, 2008

karinaandgramma.jpgI’ve been telling people lately that I get great gas mileage because I drive like a Granny. I don’t know where that came from, really: for example, my dear friend Michelle’s grandmother was famous for driving really fast while she lived in Florida so all those other old people couldn’t rear-end her. I have seen some elderly people driving very carefully on the highways, but I’ve also seen some young people driving carefully as well. Our Elders get a bad rap!

But as I was thinking about it, I realized that I really DO drive like a granny. Like MY granny. I remember Gramma telling me about efficiency races where her dad and other dudes would get a measured amount of gas, and whoever could go the furthest would win. She would explain to me how to drive on the highways like a trucker, because truckers were most efficient and would slow down going up hills and speed up down hills in order to conserve momentum. She was never in a big hurry to get to the next red stoplight. And just in case of emergencies, she explained to me how to siphon gas out of someone elses gas tank without swallowing a bunch of it.

Tomorrow is her birthday – Happy birthday, Gramma! Thanks for all the excellent tips!

Have you picked up any efficiency expertise from your grandparents? How to save and conserve?

Also: one of my grandmas saved bakery string. I laughed at it at the time, but now I get it. Such is maturity, I guess.

I doubt my grandma thought much if at all about saving the environment, but efficiency, oh yes. I think I inherited a lot of my “waste not, want not” attitude from her. And with me a lot of that translates to environmentalism.

Dear grandMa:

I go by 2 adages:

1- It’s cheapest to save fuel than to buy fuel.

2- Saving energy is cheapest than buying or producing it.

Based on the above, I am pleased to inform you that my company Green Technology MFG manufactures a patented moment-o-meter allowing the driver of any vehicles to save 20% to 50% IMMEDIATELY, not in ten years as it may be the case (in case of success) with wind and solar energy.

Moment-o-meter is a stand-alone device and does not require any installation. Just plug it in your cigarette lighter, calibrate it and you are ready to save fuel the very first mile.

You can get the full picture at the company’s web site http://www.extra-mpg.com.

Your comments are welcome.

Sewing and patching old clothes… repairing little damages to your purse… reuse reuse reuse, everything that you can… the joy of cooking healthy food from scratch… all great lessons my Gramma taught me about saving energy, even if that wasn’t her ultimate goal.
