Easy Peasy Tip: Creatively Wrap!

By tinychoices | October 11, 2008

Next time you’ve got a gift to give, take a few minutes to think about alternatives to traditional (and, most likely, made from chopped down whole trees) gift wrap.  There’s Furoshiki, old lace hankies or cloth napkins, maps, comics, paper bags or boxes… the list of ideas goes on and on.  By wrapping your thoughtful present in thoughtful wrapping, you’re automatically doubling your green cred.

My folks used to make fun of me for saving wrapping paper from gifts. It became a game for me to see how many times I could reuse a single piece. Now I like to use old street maps and train schedules to wrap up gifts.

This is such a simple idea- that if tons of people woud do, would save sooooo much waste during holidays!!! I totally re-use everything, from paper, to ribbons, cards, etc…

I am so glad you posted about Furoshiki today and that I read about it over lunch. I went to a clothing swap tonight (yay for sustainable clothing) and somebody took my reusuable bag. And I had a pile of clothes to bring home. I also had a big scarf so I just rolled it up in the watermelon carrier style. Simple solution and a fun fortuitous way to end a sustainable evening !

At my work we are trying our best to come up with packaging solutions that are environmentally friendlier than the traditional methods. It is a bit of a struggle as obviously the most ‘eco’ packaging would be no packaging at all. So we see ourselves as promoting the better choice.

It began with developing decorative ribbon and fabrics made from 100% post-consumer recycled materials (drinks bottles and the such) and we have moved onto developing our first consumer level line of environmentally friendly gift wrapping kits that will be in the shops next year. These will couple the recycled ribbons with wrapping paper which is also 100%PC.

The line will be called PlanetLime - any thoughts?
