ICU Eyeglasses

By Jenn | December 23, 2008

Last week I read the GreenGuide.com’s  gift guide, and happened to notice the listing for ICU eyeglasses: “Just about every consumer product now comes in green—including over-the-counter readers. From ICU’s Eco-Friendly Reading Glasses collection, the frames are made with 100 percent post-consumer recycled metal, bamboo and plastic from reclaimed factory waste.”

I don’t need eyewear, but I’ve noticed this brand of over-the-counter glasses in the past– I think they made an impression on me because there are so many neat frame designs and colors that I actually would be happy to wear, if I needed to.

What I hadn’t realized is how environmentally aware the company is– so this gift guide clued me in to the company’s green decisions.  The day after I read the guide I saw these glasses in two different shops, and paid closer attention– what I find incredibly interesting is that there are no signs on their displays proclaiming the decision to use 100% recycled plastic, bamboo, or reclaimed plastic waste for their frames.  And poking around the website, I still can’t find any eco-product info… well, further Google searching turned up evidence of their dedication to fair treatment of workers, and donation of used glasses to those in need.

So here we have a case study of a company engaging in whatever the polar opposite of greenwashing is– they’re clearly going to great pains to use earth-friendlier materials for their products, and yet are not screaming their virtue from the rooftops.

It’s refreshing to find a company which might very well be making eco-decisions because it’s just clearly the right thing to do, and not necessarily because it’s the hip thing to do.  Though of course, we all know that Reducing, Reusing and Recycling is off-the-charts sexy…

Do you have a favorite product which is green, without being “!!!GREEN!!!”
