Celebrating the Inauguration the Green Way
By Karina | January 19, 2009
I’m really excited to tell y’all that on Tuesday, I’ll be in Washington DC with up to 2 million (plus!) of my new best friends gawking at crowds and enjoying the inauguration. I don’t have tickets, but my beau’s brother lives near by in MD so we are taking advantage of the family connection and planning to spend about 12 hours in DC experiencing the finest in JumboTron broadcasts (and freezing cold temperatures).
There are a few things going on this year that are slated to make the inauguration quite green:
- For one, Pete Seeger played at the inauguration opening concert on Sunday. Pete Seeger is an environmentalist and an activist and also, by the way, a really wonderful musician.
- There will be valet bike parking in DC for those people who are able to bike in to where the action is. The Washington Area Bicyclists Association will be parking and protecting over 1,000 bikes for attendees. Because many of the local streets will be shut down for car traffic, this will make traveling nearer a lot easier.
- There’s a Green Inaugural Ball! For some reason Jenn and I weren’t invited (I prefer to think our invitations were lost in the mail), but if you’d like to watch it over the internet check out their blog for more information. Some things that make the Green Ball, well, green, include 100% carbon offsets for the event, LED lighting, and no plastic bottles at the event. Oh, and also: Al Gore.
- For obvious reasons, traffic will be a disaster and people from far and wide will be taking public transit into DC. We’re traveling on the MARC system via train, which offered advance tickets only and is sold out. However, there are buses available to get people into town. I saw some flyers in NYS for a day bus trip to DC that was leaving at MIDNIGHT in order to get people down there in time. Amtrak added additional capacity and Barack Obama has been on a well publicised whistle-stop tour on his way into town. This is a chance for public transit to shine!
Anyone else going to be in DC for the inauguration? Leave a comment or send a @tinychoices tweet (or direct message)!
