Tiny Choices Survey: Dale!

By tinychoices | March 6, 2009

mthood.jpgVital statistics (name, age, location, link to website/blog)?
Dale Case, 59, Hillsboro, Or.

How do you reside (apartment or house, roommates)?
My wife and I live 4.5 miles South of Hillsboro on an acre and a half in a rural area that is all zoned for farmland. There is an urban growth boundary two miles from us that I very much hope stays there beyond my lifetime.

Are your housing decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
My housing decision is completely by choice. I have lived here for thirty-seven years and hope to never have to leave.

How do you travel (transit, car, etc)?
I travel almost exclusively by car. I work in construction and need to travel to various places with a lot of stuff. The nearest mass transit is four miles away. There are bus lines in town, as well as a light rail line going to Portland and beyond. We do use the light rail when we can.

Are your travel decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
Most are by necessity, for work. I try to incorporate shopping and other such things in my work travels, but it isn’t always practical. I guess that leaves the rest to choice.

Tell us about a Tiny Choice you’ve made in your life.
I asked my wife to make me a sign for the back window of my car that says “Just Say No To Plasticrap”. I am trying to eliminate as much plastic as I can from my life. It is difficult.

What is the one environmental dilemma you personally struggle the most with?
Plastic! It is everywhere you look. I bring plastic home from job sites all the time to recycle, but now it appears that plastic recycling is pretty much in the tank and a lot of it is probably ending up in landfills.

What is one Tiny Choice you can make in that direction?
I guess that would be to use less and less plastic. I take my own plastic bags to use for bulk food items at the store I shop at. I can’t take containers for the most part, but I do when I can refill the ones that came from that store.

What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you make that people question (in either a positive educational or a negative hassle way) you the most about?
I don’t eat much meat and what I do eat does not come from commercial sources. Some people don’t understand why I don’t buy any meat at grocery stores. I am always happy to explain why.

What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you would like every single person to adopt?
Work to eliminate plastic use.

Do you feel like you make sacrifices for environmentalism? Please explain.
I don’t feel like I make sacrifices for environmentalism. I make lifestyle changes for environmentalism. There are lifestyle changes that are forced on people by circumstances that could more be considered sacrifices.

Are you generally: optimistic, pessimistic, neutral about environmentalism and the future?
I think I am somewhere in the middle between optimistic and pessimistic., but far from neutral. There are so many positive forces in play now that there is room for hope, but at the same time the hope is tempered by the huge backlog of problems staring us in the face. If we don’t make very large progress fast, we may not survive.
