Tiny Choices Survey: Loren!

By tinychoices | March 13, 2009

loren.jpgVital statistics (name, age, location, link to website/blog)?
Loren Talbot, 35, Sunnyside, NY, LocalLabels.com

How do you reside (apartment or house, roommates)?
Happily- in an apartment in Sunnyside, Queens with my boyfriend. We have an amazing view of the city and if I sneak up on to the roof I can see all the bridges in the region.

Are your housing decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
Choice, but soon changing due to the necessity to have more trees and fresh air around me.

How do you travel (transit, car, etc)?
I once applied to be the MTA queen if that is a sign- I have had many 4 borough days on the subway and am a not-so-secret fan of the bus. When it is warm I bike as much as possible, but wimpy when it is cold.

Are your travel decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
Choice. There was actually a point in time when my roommates and I had a car each. We were a 3 car, NYC apartment! I must admit, I miss it, as I left the city a lot more to enjoy the outdoors – but now I use Zipcar or rent when necessary.

Tell us about a Tiny Choice you’ve made in your life.
Hmmm, my favorite tiny choice- I am a bit of an excessive re-user. This infiltrates everything from my 2nd hand clothes purchasing to my collage art to my container world. I try overall not to shop.

What is the one environmental dilemma you personally struggle the most with?

Cant chose just one-probably water use or electricity. I love my nightly bath and I am on the computer all day. I have been trying to be hyper aware of my energy and water uses.

What is one Tiny Choice you can make in that direction?
We’ll I look forward to someday being on solar and grey water systems, but for the time being I try to cut down on both. I air dry my clothes, take less baths, switched all my light bulbs. I need to switch my energy provider to someone with sustainable choices. I use to have it, but my company folded and I need to redo.

What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you make that people question (in either a positive educational or a negative hassle way) you the most about?
Buying Locally, on all levels, not just food. Our city has been dramatically compromised in the past few years as big box stores have infiltrated due to new regulations on floor area ratios in building as well as business interests. This has allowed stores which would never come here previously due to size be able to dominate the market. But many New Yorkers are still holding it down.

What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you would like every single person to adopt?
Conscience thinking. If every single person thought about their impact and actually cared enough to make many tiny choices- what a world it would be.

Do you feel like you make sacrifices for environmentalism? Please explain.
If we take the true definition of the word sacrifice “as an offering to a deity”, I make my sacrifices and tiny choices to our earth with great enthusiasm.

Are you generally: optimistic, pessimistic, neutral about environmentalism and the future?
Ha, tough one. I am an overly optimistic person who believes that humans are the worst thing for our environment. I’ve just got to mention over population somewhere in this. As far as I am concerned it all boils down to how many of us there are with the given space we have.
