The White House Victory Garden!
By Jenn (TinyChoices.com) | March 20, 2009
Amazing news: the Obamas are planting an organic veggie garden on the White House lawn! It will be visible from the street, and will include 55 different types of fruits and veggies plus two beehives. Fifth graders from a local school will help plant, maintain and harvest the plot– and every Obama is expected to help, “whether they like it or not,” says Michelle.
This is not only a coup for food activists of all stripes, but an amazing example to set for everyone watching (and who’s not watching the Obamas?). The estimated cost to launch the garden (seeds, mulch, etc) is just $200, which will be multiplied many times over by the fresh, healthy, live and nutritious food the First Family will be eating and sharing with the community. This is the first time since WWII that there will be a garden on the White House grounds– back then, Eleanor Roosevelt planted her own to show solidarity with the war effort. And, here’s a really fascinating timeline of Presidential gardening.
Realizing that not everyone has access to a plot of land for gardening, Michelle said: “You can begin in your own cupboard by eliminating processed food, trying to cook a meal a little more often, trying to incorporate more fruits and vegetables.” Sounds like Tiny Choices to us!
And, our Tiny hats off to the activists, including writers, bloggers, petition-writers & petition-signers, who have been working hard for this cause.

My parents always had a garden and I think I was in fifth grade when I really started to shirk my ‘volunteer’ work related to the garden.
On an unrelated note, we forced our teenagers to voluntarily shell peas at the kitchen table yesterday. Great character building activity ;)
Yes, “teenagers” and “voluntarily shelling peas” go hand in hand… :)
