Guest Post: Obama’s Green Playground

Tiny Choices is happy to present a guest post written by Janet Thaeler:
The first family is turning the White House “green” with their attention to detail about energy and environmental conservation. They’ve recently focused on the White House grounds. You know about the organic vegetable garden. Now the Obamas have put in a new playground.
Like the garden, the playground was designed with sustainability in mind. The swing set, slide, and other playground equipment was made with 100% North American cedar and redwood. The wood is “certified” to ensure it complies with all local, state, and federal harvesting regulations.
The grass underneath the playground was then replaced with a rubber mulch made from recycled tires. The playground surface is not only “green” but it’s much safer (and softer) for the Obama kids and their friends.
It’s fun watching the Obamas remake the White House for their family and to match their values. Because of their interest in gardening and the economy more people are interested in growing theiro own food. I heard that our local nursery had the best weekend on record last week. I was picking out my vegetable starts and now hoping my pea plants make it through this week’s snow storms!
There’s more to the story though. It’s the example of living your talk. Any time we remodel our home we can look for products that save energy or our good for the environment.
What’s next for the Obamas? I vote for solar panels in the White House lawn.
What’s your vote?

This is a great post Janet, its good to see that the first family is involved with the environment. It is interesting to note that the rubber mulch was installed for safety reasons and is also environment friendly. Being environmental friendly doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice anything to supplement it.
You can checkout before and after pics of the playground with and without the rubber mulch http://duvid.com/blog/?p=6

Great to see the Obama’s leading by example by both looking after their kids and being environmentally friendly at the same time!
