Tiny Choices Survey: Sanjeevanee!
By tinychoices | April 3, 2009
Vital statistics (name, age, location, link to website/blog)?
Sanjeevanee Vidwans, 32 years old, Jersey City, NJ, not my website but my company’s — we are a full service real estate firm that works on green construction projects almost exclusively: www.rosecompanies.com
How do you reside (apartment or house, roommates)?
Two bedroom apartment with one roommate– my husband :)
Are your housing decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
Choice — we wanted to live in a city and close (if not in) NYC. Personally I like that we use every square inch of our apartment. It feels so wasteful to me when people don’t, or they let it fill up with useless stuff. My husband works from home so the second bedroom doubles as his office. One day we might need a bigger place but for now we’re very happy with apartment living!
How do you travel (transit, car, etc)? Are your travel decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
I travel to work by public transit (train) and weekends usually by car. We have one car for the two of us but it rarely gets used during the week. My travel decisions are dictated by choice — I get to work faster with public transit and I cherish my alone time on the train. I get places faster by car on the weekends — but I try to walk if I can. If I travel by car then I try to lump together trips as much as possible.
Tell us about a Tiny Choice you’ve made in your life.
I signed up for green power — it’s so easy! I did it through our local energy provider, PSEG, and it’s just a few dollars extra a month.
What is the one environmental dilemma you personally struggle the most with?
Water conservation. I have a bad habit of cleaning things (such as the dishes, or my body) longer than they need to be cleaned which results in more water use than is probably necessary.
What is one Tiny Choice you can make in that direction?
I could try to take shorter showers- maybe establish a speedier routine that still gets the job done :)
What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you make that people question (in either a positive educational or a negative hassle way) you the most about?
my choice to be a pescetarian, which I just made in 2009. I don’t eat meat because of the industry’s effect on the environment. I hope our new administration brings some changes to the industry — if it does I would consider eating it again.
What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you would like every single person to adopt?
Refuse plastic bags whenever you can. I carry a reusable bag with me everywhere- it rolls up really small and fits in my purse and comes in so handy! I feel like a million bucks every time I refuse a plastic bag. I also bring reusable bags when grocery shopping and if I buy fruits or veggies that need a separate bag, I bring along the bag that my newspaper or my bread came in and reuse it.
Do you feel like you make sacrifices for environmentalism? Please explain.
Yes, not eating meat sometimes feels like a sacrifice because I did like to eat it. But I think it’s worth it.
Are you generally: optimistic, pessimistic, neutral about environmentalism and the future?
Generally optimistic but I do feel pessimistic at times when I hear about something that harms the environment that could have been easily avoided.
