Tiny Choices Survey: Vanessa!
By tinychoices | May 1, 2009
Vital statistics (name, age, location, link to website/blog)?
Vanessa Lauria, 27, Rochester, NY, www.pidgepidge.etsy.com
How do you reside (apartment or house, roommates)?
I live in a 3rd floor apt with my boyfriend and crabby cat.
Are your housing decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
We’re renting a small cozy apartment by necessity. We don’t really need more space (although I’m sure we could easily fill it) and can’t imagine the cost of utilities a whole house would bring.
How do you travel (transit, car, etc)? Are your travel decisions dictated by choice or necessity? Please explain.
We do a lot of walking. I work from home, library and YMCA are down the street. We take the car to the market once a week and are pretty much homebodies the rest of the time.
Tell us about a Tiny Choice you’ve made in your life.
We belong to a CSA that we depend on for most produce throughout the year and I really try to buy seasonally and locally if we need fruits and veggies at the supermarket (bye bye bananas!)
What is the one environmental dilemma you personally struggle the most with?
It takes a lot of time and guilt to buy milk, cheese and dairy products. Most times I pick up and put down an item several times before purchasing it or leaving it behind. I try to buy milk from a regional company, but have to block out the fact that it’s probably a mix of dozens (if not more) of cows.
What is one Tiny Choice you can make in that direction?
When I can, I try to make my own yogurt and buy cheese from local farms. If budget allows, I can opt for locally farmed milk or even cut down on dairy consumption.
What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you make that people question (in either a positive educational or a negative hassle way) you the most about?
Why am I a vegetarian?
What is the one environmental Tiny Choice you would like every single person to adopt?
Bring your own reusable bag to not just the grocery store- but the convenience store, the farmer’s market, the mall, the craft store!
Do you feel like you make sacrifices for environmentalism? Please explain.
In a selfish way (loving to cook) I definitely sacrifice some of the variety in my diet. I’d love asparagus in February and peaches in June- but living in upstate NY requires patience.
Are you generally: optimistic, pessimistic, neutral about environmentalism and the future?
I like to think I’m optimistic- it seems like a lot of easy things to be “green” (even the phrase “go green”) are coming to the
forefront in the media. I don’t get dirty looks from the checkout person when I pull out my cotton bags any more. Farmer’s markets are popping up everywhere. But I’m still worried that America will keep getting more and more unhealthy- at the cost of our natural resources and environment.
