Yoga Mat Graveyards

We here at TC HQ are big fans of the yoga, in all forms: free and online, hot ‘n sweaty, and everything in between. Guest poster Roz wrote about awesome natural rubber mats, which help yogis avoid the PVC issue.
But… the time comes in every yogis practice when their mat kicks the bucket– so, what to do? Here are a few options:
Amber over at the Boulder Mat Company wrote to let me know about their Renew and Recycle Program, which rewards donators with a $5 coupon for future purchases– I love that the mats go towards introducing newbies to the magic of the practice:
When you donate your gently used yoga mat to The Bolder Mat Company, we will clean and refurbish it, and then donate it to yoga-inspired charities across the United States. Your mat will then be used to teach at risk populations about the benefits of yoga.
Also, I found this awesome article titled “How to Make Flip Flops from a Yoga Mat“… crafty and hardcore!
Then there’s the roundup of “50 Ways to Reuse Your Yoga or Fitness Mat” which contains some great and some slightly bizarro ideas…
And of course, Karina has written about the Recycle Your Mat program, which “upcycles” (or “downcycles”, depending on your point of view) mats into other products.
What are your thoughts/experiences on the inevitable end-of-life for your mats, past and present?

A bit pricey but might be worth it. Curious what you earth-minded folks think of it. I am in the market for a mat, and am considering it myself.

I know very little about yoga and only a bit more about gardening, but I would guess that used yoga mats would prove useful as ground cover and emergency protection from frost. They could also be um, lateral-cycled into kneeling pads in the garden.
