Easy Peasy Tip: Pack light, pack smart!
By tinychoices | May 9, 2009
The next time you are packing for a trip, pack as lightly as you can. It will save your back, it will save weight (and therefore gas) in the vehicle you’re traveling in, and it will make you feel more relaxed to not have to worry about how to get all your luggage from point A to point B.
On the other hand, pack smart! make sure you’re packing utilitarin clothes that you want to and love to wear. Don’t bring uncomfortable things, rather make sure that each item you’re bringing fits correctly and will match other items in your pack. If you need to, think ahead and bring laundry soap so you can do a load of wash mid-journey.
By packing light you are giving yourself more time and energy to enjoy your trip and your surroundings. You save fuel by not weighting down your vehicle. And when done right, it’s pretty liberating!

Do you have kids? It’s pretty much impossible to pack light with a kid or baby in tow. We took a three-day trip last weekend (me, huzz, and baby) with one bag for me and huzz and one very full bag for baby.
The only way I can think of packing lighter for a baby is taking along a baby carrier instead of a stroller, but we couldn’t have managed our luggage on the subway without a stroller to tote it around (we would have had to take a taxi)!
We packed reasonably light for our recent trip. The trip involved taxis, trains, a ferry and also a long walk. The things that I said NO to included a portable CD player and surplus shoes.
On a previous trip, I witnessed a mishap related to an overloaded piece of luggage. A young women was walking ahead of us on the long march between the ferry terminal and the actual ferry. She had an overstuffed suitcase with two plastic wheels. The weight was too much for the bearing on one of the wheels. The metal center part of the wheel melted through the plastic of the wheel housing. I stopped to help her pick up the pieces and I burned my finger.
