Easy Peasy Tip: Work the Windows!
By tinychoices | May 23, 2009
As we turn from spring to summer (quite suddenly this year in the northeast of the U.S.) remember to take advantage of the natural heating and cooling cycle of the outdoors. Open your windows at night to let the cool air in, and close them in the day to keep the hot air out. You’ll be surprised at how effective this is, especially if you couple it with some floaty curtains to keep the direct sunlight out!

One of my favorite things about living on the east coast and not Arizona is being able to keep your windows opened most of the year. I try to keep my windows opened and not use the AC for as long as I can. It just feels so nice to have fresh air in the house.
We have a whole-house fan, which is such a blessing in our old 1930’s house. We open a few windows in the basement, turn on the fan, and it sucks all the air up into the attic. It works like a charm - until it gets too late in the summer and the humidity makes AC a must. (It’s also a bit of a pain when the bats come ’round. http://lloydandlauren.com/2006/11/14/the-bat-man/ )
Also, if at all possible, shade your windows from the outside - glass gets pretty hot in direct sun and that heat is getting transferred into your house.
