Earlier in the year, I saw a NYTimes Home and Garden slideshow featuring Petz Scholtus, an eco-product designer in Barcelona, and showcasing a lamp fashioned out of water jug. How super! This is an “open-source” DIY lamp, and directions are located here. The lamp calls for just a translucent plastic container and a bulb fitting with CFL (so as to avoid overheating your plastic container). Depending on the sturdiness you can use the light as a stool or table! Of course, don’t rush out to buy a new container for this project. But if you’re like me, you may have a stack of bottles of ex-laundry-detergent bottles that are just dying to be repurposed. This lamp is marvelously simple, and quite beautiful.
