More Amazing NYC Bikingness!
By Karina | September 21, 2009
Because of Team Tiny Choices proximity to the Big Apple (and because of Jenn’s participation in bike commuting there), we feel a little invested in it’s successes and failures. And here are a couple of successes that I really thought were interesting!
- For one, NYC this year has been issuing (and reissuing) bike maps of the city. They look like a great idea to poke around different neighborhoods and find out the safest ways to get between boroughs. The first map was released in May and called “Queens around the World.” This map offers short guided ride suggestions (and a longer 18-mile tour) with lots of neat things to look at. And NYC has a bunch of other cool bike publications listed here!
- I love love love infographics, so I’m happy my friend Rocco sent me this one: a neat display of all the ways NYC scores an awesome in biking! For example – even though only 0.7% of NYC commutes by bike (compared to 3.9% in Portland) it has 429 miles of bike lanes (compared to Portland’s 303)! I wish that this infographic included the area measurements of each metro area, so I looked it up – New York City is 303 square miles and Portland is 145 square miles – so we’re not blasting Portland out of the water, but dare I say we are catching up?
Any bike news from your community?

I don’t live in a city… not by a long shot – I’m just outside of a very small town, and it is a good 8 mile trip to anything significant, but we do have out own post office and I ride my bike there instead of driving. Tiny choices!
