Thrift Shop Shopping

By Jenn | October 15, 2009

thrift1.jpgWhat with the recent weather change from warm to not-at-all-warm, I suddenly had the realization that I had nothing to wear.  So today I went on a shopping spree– at my local thriftshop!  This way I purchased items which already existed (thus no production pollution), which are nearly-new, and cost me a fraction of the retail cost.

For approximately $50 I got:

The truth is, I actually enjoy shopping at thrift shops more than at retail stores.  In regular stores, I often don’t find much I like– and when you think about it, there’s a very limited selection: lots of the same styles in different sizes and colors.  If you don’t like what’s being shown that season, you’re pretty much out of luck.  But in thrift shops– especially big ones– the selection is near limitless!  Sure, that electric blue organic cardigan may be an XS– but if you’re also an XS then it’s your day!  We can pay no heed to what’s supposed to be currently in style, and instead buy what we like and what fits well.  It’s revolutionary, really.

How do you feel about shopping at thrift stores?

Regular thrift stores - no; Junior League resale stores - yes! I don’t want the discards of people in my socioecononic group; rich folks have way better castoffs.

I get almost all my families clothing from thrift stores. I have two kids who grow out of clothing almost as quickly as they get it. Aside from the money saved I know that the money I do spend there is going to a cause I want to support.

Good point, Winnie– I forgot to mention that our thrift-store dollars go towards whichever charity is running the shop, instead of to a faceless multinational chain… so much better!

I love thrift stores too! Though like Martha, I usually trek to one in a better neighborhood, as the goods are a little nicer - but it’s a great way to stock your closet for less money, and support your local shops/charities.

A few years ago, I got my favorite pair of comfy jeans secondhand. Then I was somewhere with a black light, and there was a mysterious shape on the leg that only showed under the black light. Fortunately I have a big imagination and low squick factor. :-)

Hah! Aren’t you just so curious about the provenance of that invisible stain? :)

I love, love, love Goodwill. Like whoa. I got six tops the other day for about $28.

I love shopping in thrift stores. I find things that I don’t ever see in regular stores. I work outside year round and need tons of warm sweaters. But I don’t want to pay full price on something I might ruin the first day at work. So thrift store prices really make it easy to stay warm and have cool clothes.
