DIY: Lampshade Redux

| As mentioned in a recent post, I have a great bedside lamp which was in dire need of some crafty help. About a year ago I’d tried to dye the shade using beet juice, and it was a gorgeous pinkish hue… for a very short time. Then the color began to fade, and the thing just looked pathetic. See? | |

| I figured the easiest way to give the shade some lovin’ would be to cover it in a pretty paper. So I went to a specialty paper shop (there are three on a single block in Manhattan, which is kind of awesome) and found beautiful red paper flecked with gold. The clerk asked, “Christmas wrapping paper?” which made me think about the green wall behind the lamp… so I went back to the shelves and got a sheet of the purple gold-flecked paper, instead. Was a good decision. Thanks, art-school-student clerk! | |
| So, here’s the new lampshade: | |

| All I did was remove the shade from the lamp, and roll it along a big blank sheet of paper while tracing the top and bottom outline (I added in a 1/2″ overlap on one side, for the seam). I then cut out that template, and traced it onto the purple paper. Then I cut that out, wrapped it around the existing shade, and rubber-cemented the seam. Am thinking about adding a top and bottom gold edge to make it look more finished, but honestly, that’ll probably never happen… Et voila, a ridiculously simple new lampshade for the cost of a $4 sheet of paper. |

that is so pretty! we just picked up some lampshade rings from a friend who had previously given us the matching and huge and large red lamp – I plan to use my knee MRIs to make a creepy awesome lamp shade like this!
that is so beautiful, great job!
