Easy Peasy Tip: Wash it out!
By tinychoices | November 21, 2009
As much as many of us are trying to cut down on plastic in our homes and kitchens, odds are, there’s still a few plastic bags floating around. So instead of recycling them or tossing them, take your time after use and wash them out. You can buy Plastic Bag Dryers, which are handy and compact ways to hang out your bag so the insides to dry, or you can just put them over the ends of forks and knives in your silverware drying rack. If you’ve got cabinet handles that stick out enough, you can just pop the bags onto the handles to dry out overnight.
You’ll save bags, reduce plastic use, and have some handy containers around for those applications where you really need them!

My friends have been teasing me for years about washing out plastic bags for re-use…something I learned from my mom. Though I rarely end up with plastic shopping bags anymore, I still seem to bring home clear bags with bulk supplies and produce. My latest trick is to keep several “vegie bags” folded flat in my coat pocket, so that when I stop to pick up a few things at the grocery store I don’t have to take a new bag.
And by the way, I tried washing my hair with baking soda this morning - it really works! No more plastic shampoo bottles!!
I was a young girl when they invented plastic bags. First, bread started to come in them and Mom would wash them and use them over and over. I’ve always washed bags - except for those that meat were in. I have a large hanger over the end of a set of shelves in the kitchen and on the hanger are several clip clothespins that I use to hang up the bags. As much as I cook, it is a significant savings.
