Have a Thoughtful Black Friday!
By Karina | November 27, 2009
Welcome back to Black Friday, traditionally the biggest shopping day of the year! Chances are if you’re reading this you’re not one of the true shopping die-hards, those people are out at the stores at 3 or 4 AM and this post doesn’t go live until 5 AM EST. For many of us, shopping isn’t any fun during the year either - and Black Friday can get really ugly
sometimes too. There’s always Buy Nothing day, which is one good excuse to not hit the stores. But if you’re thinking of shopping, here some other things to consider.
- If you want to get that shopping thrill still, head out to a thrift store and see what you can get for little cash. You’ll be giving back to the community too, through the agency that runs the thrift store.
- Instead of shopping for non-consumables, get out and pick up some consumables… then take them to a friends house and have a potluck. Maybe talk about a different kind of gifting strategy for this holiday season?
- Consider poking around electronically for some alternative gift ideas - like gifting a charity in someone’s name. It’s often fun to tailor the charity to the recipient!
- And no matter what you do, don’t leave the house without a budget!
Personally, I will probably sleep in a little bit and then hit the grocery store (we let our fridge go empty so we’d have room for the Thanksgiving dinner we prepared) and plan a good couple of meals, because we’re having some friends stay over Friday night and I love being a well prepared host. I also need to spend a little serious time planning out my holiday gifts before we hit December - I HATE December without a plan! And then our friends will get in! A super day.
What are you doing this year on Black Friday?

I did the whole Black Friday thing - but stuck to things like socks at half off and buy1get1 on board games for the family - then hit the Goodwill and found some treasures.
Love the half off socks and buy1get1 board games - great deals that end up lasting all year long!
