Friday Tiny Confessions
By tinychoices | March 12, 2010
So, as happens occasionally, we are out of surveys. [big hint! go fill one out! and send it to us!] and the Favorite Green Place has never taken off [um, it's not too late to share one of those with us either!] So, what to do for Friday content?
it’s TINY CONFESSION TIME!
We’ve done this before – this is your no-guilt place to let off some steam about a tiny choice which you think may have not gone in the right direction. Today’s topic: What’s the most frivolous purchase you’ve made that has really been eating you up? You know what we mean: something you bought that you didn’t need, couldn’t justify, and feel pretty silly about it now that the moment has passed.
Karina: Almost immediately before we started this blog – spring of 2007? I purchased some of those over-the-counter tooth whitening trays. The disposable plastic trays that are wrapped in plastic and have weird bleachy gel in them. And I didn’t use them all up, and I am STILL thinking about them, years later. Of course it doesn’t help that I’ve never gotten rid of them, and in fact *moved them* to my current home. Gah!
Jenn: Lately I’ve been buying cups of coffee in disposable cups. Like, more frequently than I’d like to admit. I had given the stuff up for years, but now am back to drinking it (though I’m trying to cut back), and so I’m in this middle ground of not really being a coffee drinker but kind of being a coffee drinker. So, the part of me which is denying the addiction refuses to bring my reusable mug along, because I’m not going to get coffee on my way to work! And then the animal half of my brain takes over between the time I exit the subway and enter my office… and thus, disposable cups. It’s unnecessary and embarrassing. And now ya’ll know.
So, what about you? Leave your Tiny Confessions in the comments! (anonymous is ok too!)

I gave up composting this past summer NOT because I don’t want to or it’s too hard, but because I want to move and don’t want to deal with a compost bin that’s only have “done.” I hope by the time I move the compost will be broken down and I can spread it in the yard instead of bagging it up as yard waste.
the four packages of bamboo flooring that are currently still packaged up and hiding under the spare bed.
*sigh*
we purchased the flooring online for the kitchen … and after installing the cabinets, we realized the flooring DID NOT MATCH. like, at all and looked really ick. so we boxed it up and went out and purchased more flooring … this time: hickory from some local place that probably doesn’t score high on the eco-friendly scale (honestly, i didn’t even look … i was too upset about not having a floor!).
*SIGH*
This isn’t a purchase but something I received, and it certainly isn’t tiny! Two Christmases ago, my father bought me an 18″ Martin-Yale Premier paper trimmer. Those in the art biz would know it’s a pricey piece of equipment, around $160-180. It’s still in the box, never been opened, currently leaning against the wall by my desk, where it has resided since the day I received it. I have no use for it and it was non-returnable, but can’t rationalize donating/giving away a brand-new $180 piece of equipment. I keep thinking “somehow” we’ll be able to get our money back. No luck yet. :-(
I’m still addicted to Diet Coke, so lots of aluminum cans :/
I’m with Jenn on the disposable cups. When I fly, I’m usually full to the limit, that I just don’t bring my mug with me. I try to make it at least a wee bit better by reusing the sleeves.
I occasionally shop at a grocery store that has vegetables I love (typical Indian vegetables not available in US supermarkets) in packaging that I hate (Styrofoam trays covered with plastic wrap) and buying them makes me so guilty :(
I have been making my own household/bath/kitchen cleaners for several years but occasionally still give the bath a scrub with chemical cleaners. Works faster, less effort on my part, looks cleaner. There, I’ve said it.
Sigh, fast food too much store bought packaged food. Wrong in so many ways but I spend the entire meal thinking about all the dang pointless trash. Both me and my husband have disabilities though, so sometimes fast food and packaged stuff is our best option.
