Forest Bathing

By Jenn | July 8, 2010

parktrees.jpgIt’s no secret that Team Tiny Choices loves the great outdoors– both Karina and I are huge fans of camping, wooded walks, and s’mores– and I think we’d both agree that we feel more grounded, connected, and calm when we’ve had some good quality time with the trees.

Turns out, research is starting to prove that  being in nature– even the types of nature which is found contained within city parks– is healthy for us in a real way.  Not only does it reduce stress, but get this: it boosts immune function, even in relatively small doses.  The New York Times sums it up nicely:

THE BOTTOM LINE:

According to studies, exposure to plants and trees seems to benefit health.

Basically, being around greenery can lower blood pressure, lower pulse rate, lower concentrations of cortisol, and raise concentrations of white blood cells.  In Japan, this practice has become known as “Forest Bathing”– which is the most beautiful phrase ever.  The words alone are enough to make me bliss out!

As a city dweller, I’m heartened to hear that these benefits can be had from urban parks, and not just from the lush and wild nature of my dreams…  so not only do walks in the park make me feel better, they actually make my body healthier– cool!

What kind of nature are you surrounded by on a daily basis, and/or how often are you surrounded by trees?
