Playpus Water Tank Review

By Karina | July 12, 2010

One of the exciting things I’ve purchased recently as a Reuseit.Com ambassador was a Platypus Reusable Water Tank. Y’all, this thing is COOL. We go car camping, right – as I’ve mentioned before! in a very small car, so we don’t have room for a lot of things like buckets or similar. So I was really excited to find this very neat reusable water tank.

I didn’t manage to get a photo of the bag collapsed, but we have the 6.0 L bag and it measures about 3 or 4 inches wide and about 12 inches long, and it’s really very flat. I wasn’t sure if I should get it or not, because, well, you know I try not to buy new stuff. But we really needed a water carrying device for our camping trips, and this tank is not only cool and collapsible, but also BPA-free.

The carrying handles are really easy to carry and soft to touch, which is a nice feature. The topĀ  of the bag is a giant zipper-style opening – as in, zippered sandwich bags, where you press the two sides together to seal. It is harder than I expected to seal it but after I got the hang of pressing it was easy enough. The pouring spout is a regular bottle cap style opening and it was very simple to balance on my knee as I poured – the handles seemed to big, but they were easy to use to control the tank while pouring.

For size comparison, we sent both the 11 year old and the 6 year old to get water from the spigot down the camp road on our recent trip, and the 6.0 L bag was easy for both of them to handle. It wasn’t too heavy, and the handles could be hooked over the spigot to fill so you didn’t have to stand there and hold it.

I would say the only concern I have at all with this bag is that the water from the spigot seemed to have some sediment in it, and that sediment collected in the bottom seams of the water tank. I used the tank a few times to water houseplants after we got home, but the sediment didn’t seem to shake lose. I’m not really concerned about it, but I will probably try to get it out a little harder later.

All in all, I’m super excited about this new water tank! I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about it, but it’s already paid for itself in awesomeness, and I look forward to taking it beach camping so we don’t have to buy any water on-site for drinking at all – we can fill it up at the bathhouse and easily carry back to our campsite. it’s super nice. I would recommend it!

(note! full disclosure, as a reuseuit.com ambassador I do get a discount on product purchases.)

I was so psyched about your rave review of this, that I ordered two of the smaller, personal water bottle sizes to take with me on my upcoming trip to a developing country… I realized that, in a place where I’m going to be carrying my own water supply everywhere and fully dependent on finding filtered water, it would be so awesome to always have a smaller size (to drink from) and a larger size (to keep in my room and refill from). And the fact that they’re collapsable means it won’t be a worry/take up room in my small backpack to have them with me– which will go a LONG way towards not buying disposable bottles as I travel along. I was also not sure about purchasing these, as I too try to not buy new stuff as much as possible, but I realized that they will quickly pay for themselves in the amount of disposable plastic saved. So, thanks for the inspiration!

These are great and we keep a couple at the house in our emergency kit in case we would need to store extra water for any reason.
