Camping Choices
By Karina | August 24, 2011
I’ve written before about the camping choices my family and I make - small car camping! We fit everything into our compact car (with roof rack), squeeze our bodies into the car, and head out merrily to find our adventure!
(For those of you in other countries, this may not seem groundbreaking, but - in many parts the USA where trucks and SUVs are the norm of this is very unusual.)
We camp every year at Assateague Island in Maryland, and this year we were talking about how there are bunches of tent campers this year! Lots of people piling into their regular vehicles and heading out to enjoy the great outdoors, instead of getting a specialized vehicle to get outside. It’s not just the camper, really - you have to worry about maintaining a larger vehicle to tow with, too.
So while it used to look like this (with campers on either side):
Now it looks a lot more like this all over:
I have to say that sadly, the reason that the campers are less common is probably the economy. Having been staying this long here one can observe the changes, and the summer of 2008 (right before the economy tanked) had lots and lots of big campers, and every year after that has shown fewer big vehicles. But I’m pretty happy that people are still getting out and spending time outside.
Now: we are thinking of building an awesome chuck wagon to tow (with our tiny car) on our week long vacation do we can keep our food away from the wildlife - and we are DIYing it too! So look forward to a post about that too.

I’ve always wanted to build a Teardrop Trailer! Have a great vaca…
We just got back from a tent camping trip in Maine. There were a lot of tents, but still a lot of pop-ups and big rigs. We are still minimalist campers - tents, cast iron pan for most meals over the open fire, and some coolers! Keep it simple, I say.
Oh man! I was camping at Assateague in July and these pictures make me want to go back right now! OK, maybe not right at this very second, since a hurricane is on the way, but maybe we can swing an overnight trip in the fall. Karina - for food I get strong bungees or (better) ratchet straps and keep all the food tied shut outside of meal times. One cooler and one rubbermaid tub of everything else made it through when the ponies raided camp early one morning.
Also, I made it to Assateague with everything I needed in a Honda Civic hatchback. OK, no shade structure but I could have crammed it in. Ok, no boyfriend either but I could have found a place for him!
