Soda Bottles Into Lightbulbs

By Jenn (TinyChoices.com) | October 12, 2011

We’re all about tiny choices here at Tiny Choices… and to me, this is a perfect example of an elegant solution to a global issue: using empty plastic soda bottles filled with water and a little chlorine to funnel light into the dark homes of people living without electricity. These bottle lights shine up to 55 watts of daylight into otherwise dark rooms, changing the lives of the inhabitants of those spaces:

How absolutely incredible that such a useful solution is one with such a small footprint! It’s using plastic bottles which would either end up in landfills or, best-case scenario, a recycling plant only to be downcycled into an inferior product. The drops of chlorine bleach are the part of this which would have some negative impact on the environment, but I’d imagine the amount in each bottle is negligible and all told are most likely better than the mercury in CFL bulbs.

The One Liter of Light Foundation is working to bring this concept to homes across the Philippines, and I’m sure the idea must exist in other places around the world, too.

This tiny choice is a lifechanger!

Have you heard of any other low-tech / high-impact solutions lately?
