Easy Peasy Tip: Fiddle with your Recipe!
By tinychoices | October 15, 2011
It’s tough when you’ve got a recipe you’d like to make, and you’ve only got most of the ingredients. Or, you’ve got a bunch of ingredients and only half are called for in your perfect dream dinner plans. So what do you do? Clearly, it’s time to fiddle with the recipe. Take a chance and veer wildly off course! Read the whole recipe through, do some internet searches for similar recipes, and then doctor, doctor, doctor. Here are some examples:
- If you’re making a classy soup like potato leek, go ahead and add some beans and some greens> easy hearty rustic soup!
- If you’re making fritters and have leftover cheese in your fridge, go ahead and add it in to the batter. It’s pretty delicious, TRUST US.
- You can substitute for important ingredients like eggs and oil - check it out!
By being a little more flexible with your cooking, you can avoid over purchasing less-frequently used ingredients, and you can make sure to use up whatever is already in your kitchen without any waste. Plus, it will be fun and delicious!

I do this with various recipes and I can attest to the fact that I never pay for over-priced ingredients (except for the very rare occasions where I feel particularly generous and when a particularly decadent recipe is called for. Birthdays, I’m looking at you!). I know a lot of people who definitely need to do this. This is also great for people who over-estimate what they need and end up wasting ingredients. Thanks for such a helpful article!
